About Me
Daryle has been involved with horses since he was a child. As a young boy he participated in 4-H
and light horse shows.
Later in life Daryle got involved in rodeo, competing in team roping, calf
roping and bareback bronc riding.
In the early 1980's, Ed Smith gave Daryle his first riding job
at the Hafford Provincial Community Pasture in Saskatchewan. For most of his life he's been a
working cowboy on community pastures and ranches. Daryle and his family moved to the Drayton
Valley area in 1985 when he started managing the Pembina Provincial Grazing Reserve. What began
as a part time venture turned into a full time training and teaching business. It was during
the time when he was working for the Pembina Pasture that he started teaching colt starting
and horsemanship clinics. Daryle began offering training clinics when he was encouraged by
people in the area to do so. Word spread and soon he was putting on 20 clinics per year
across Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Daryle would say that Ray Hunt had the biggest influence
on how he starts colts. About thirty years ago Daryle attended his first Ray Hunt Clinic
near Nanton and was excited about this method of training.
He began incorporating Ray's
methods and found success in this style of training. Daryle's occupation kept him in the saddle
everyday. His passion for horses inspired him to train them to become safe and responsive. Daryle had no interest in riding horses that were
trying to unload him at their earliest convenience. Daryle's job was his main motivation
in getting his horses working better. If he rode a good horse his job was enjoyable and he
was way less tired at the end of the day. Daryle has slowed down and teaches 5-10 clinics
a year. He still enjoys travelling and meeting new people and seeing the improvement in
people's horses. During the week you'll find him training horses and giving private lessons
in the new indoor arena that was built in the summer of 2013.
